It may sound odd, but I’m not that big a comic fan, not at all. I’m actually so much more interested in music, even though, unfortunately, I can’t play or sing a note. So I thought I’d share some of my favourites with you, a top 5 of songs that fit very well with the Happysad theme here. Coincidence? I don’t think so. They make me happy, because they’re such indescribably beautiful songs, sad because the lyrics just rip my heart to pieces. By the way, did you know Happysad is also the name of a Polish rock group? Yes, they thought of it first, so what.

5. Thinking about you all the time, by Zita Swoon. My none-Belgian visitors probably won’t know this one, but it’s really really tearing-me-up beautiful. Unfortunately I could only find a short, shaky bit of live footage which honestly doesn’t really do it justice. Try and find it somewhere else!

4. A Forest, by The Cure. A real classic and an my old time favourite. I used to collect as many live versions of this song as I could. The line “I’m running towards nothing, again and again and…” just hits where it hurts.

3. Somebody, by Depeche Mode. Yes, it’s corny. I don’t care. The lyrics are so spot on, they must be laser-guided. As always, some collateral damage should be considered inevitable.

2. Into My Arms, by Nick Cave. The Emperor of sad songs. Can you get more intense about you deepest desires than this? Why yes you can (see #1), but you’ll have to try really, really, really hard.

1. Gabriel, by Lamb. The beauty of this song is just beyond words. I think it’s the greatest song ever. It’s just out of this world. This song could be played just as well on a wedding as on a funeral (and it is), and you can’t get any more happysad than that.

Now for anyone who’s listened to these five songs in one go and is feeling sort of suicidal, I also have good news: I will resume posting new Happysad cartoons in… about 10 hours from now. Yeay!
